  • “I joined Hi-Med's intro fellowship in summer 2023. The content was great, and the fellowship was awesome overall, but the community that I found and welcomed me was the best part. I was intellectually engaged but not intimidated, inspired but not pressured to be someone totally different. Because of Hi-Med, I saw more options for an impact-oriented (but not impact-only!) life, and I connected to people who were in the same process of thinking about those options, trying them out, and trying to cultivate the better parts of ourselves despite the barriers to doing so. I found the culture to be incredible, as Marie even trusted me to give an intro talk for the community at EAGxPH despite being a newcomer. But what I love about Hi-Med is that it really makes a mark - its mentoring program and career fellowship helped me formulate clear priorities and craft a path forward after months of uncertainty with where I want to go. As just one example, through facilitated career planning, I figured out that going deeper into coding could be worth it, so I carved out time to give it a go. Acting on that insight led me to (re)discover my passion for programming, and I've been loving it ever since!”

  • “Hi-Med has had a huge impact on my career. Since taking part in year 2, I have had a clearer understanding of what I want my career to look like and what I can do to work towards that. I will be starting an intercalated Masters next September, which will help me towards my goal of getting involved in UK health policy, something that I do not believe I would have done if I had not been a part of Hi-Med.”

    Grace Foy, medical student, UK

  • “My current time with Hi-Med has been transformative. I have broadened my ideas of what I would like from my professional future. I have been able to have really interesting and inspiring conversations with members of HI-MED.“

  • “It opened many doors for me, new possibilities of making my career more effective and helping more people.”

  • “I feel that I now have a much better idea of the high impact opportunities available.”

  • “I discovered so many ways I want to invest my time and energy in high impact cause areas in the future. It gave me hope about how I still can make a difference.“

  • “It really made me realise what a "high impact career" in medicine looks like. Before the fellowship, I had never really thought about choosing a high impact career and just imagined myself working on the wards as a "typical doctor". The fellowship has shifted my way of thinking massively and what I want to achieve in my career. My desire to pursue a high impact career in medicine is my top priority e.g. working in public health.”

  • “I hadn't really considered what makes a job high impact before now, and likely would not have done so at all during my career had it not been for HiMed. I'm now more aware of how to create a bigger impact, as well as how to effectively donate money to do so.“

  • “Learning about more career paths and feel like I have places to ask questions about it in the future.“

  • “Clarified what I want to get out of my medical career and pointed me in directions which I wouldn't have already thought about.“

  • “Awareness of the vast resources that already exist. I won't have to reinvent the wheel but will be able to "stand on the shoulders of giants".”

  • “Through my facilitator, I was able to find out about opportunities/examples of people pursuing non-traditional career paths. I found this especially good because in medical studies, it is often difficult to find others who are not interested in a purely clinical path.”

  • “I originally had a very narrow scope as to the opportunities outside of Medicine for Doctors but now I feel I have had a good overview of the different fields doctors can work in.”

  • “The articles have been informative and brought to light several opportunities which are high impact, it has certainly opened up a lot more career paths in that aspect, but at the same time helped narrow down on my preferring one based on interests.”

  • “I got to know many different ways to have a high positive impact within medicine.”

Doing Good

Many medical students and doctors possess exceptional skills, as well as a deep commitment to alleviate suffering and improve the world. Opportunities to have a positive impact in this way arise at every stage of a medical career.

Areas we focus on

We focus on areas where there is the potential to have a particularly large impact.

Global Health

Mental Health

These are many other cause areas which have been independently evaluated to be large in scale, highly solvable and particularly neglected - find out more here.

Also: Our resources are by no means exhaustive. You can pursue a combination of these ideas and others depending on your preferences, interests and skills. We strive to always seek more exciting and impactful ways for medical students and doctors to contribute positively to the world - so are always adding and updating our recommendations.
